Organised around who’s actually asking, not around which sport — because a player, a club, an agent, a federation, and an academy each come to this with a genuinely different question in mind. 20 questions currently.
Persistent non-payment, after a fair opportunity for the club to correct it, can amount to just cause to terminate your contract and claim compensation. See our CAS Principle of the Month on the Sport Law Library page for how this actually plays out in a real, decided case.
Can I be forced to accept a pay cut because of financial difficulty at my club?
Not unilaterally, and not simply because you didn’t formally object. CAS has specifically rejected the idea that a player’s silence amounts to accepting a pay cut — see our El Zamalek v. Sassi case.
Can my club terminate my contract while I’m injured?
Only with genuine just cause, and generally only after giving proper warning. Our Al Safa v. Hkimi case is a direct example of a club losing this exact argument.
Who owns my image rights as an athlete?
This depends heavily on your specific contract terms, which vary significantly between clubs and jurisdictions — there is no single default rule across football. This is a question worth having reviewed directly against your own contract.
Can I appeal a federation decision to CAS?
Often yes, but only within a strict deadline — generally 21 days from formal notification. Use our decision tool for a general starting point, or see our CAS Procedure FAQ for the full detail.
What is training compensation, and could I be owed any?
It’s a payment owed to the clubs that trained you as a young player, triggered when you sign your first professional contract or move internationally before your contract ends. See our Football Law Dictionary entry for the full explanation.
Club6›
Can we terminate a player’s contract for poor performance alone?
Poor performance on its own is very unlikely to meet the just-cause standard. Clubs that have tried this route in CAS have generally lost.
Can we deduct fines from a player’s salary?
It depends on where the fine came from. CAS has drawn a real distinction: fines imposed by your football association’s own disciplinary process can generally be deducted; fines from your own internal club process, without proper due process, generally cannot. See our El Zamalek v. Sassi case.
Can we cut player salaries because of a financial crisis, like we saw during COVID-19?
Only as a last resort, and only if strict cumulative conditions are met first — it is not a right a club can simply invoke. Our El Zamalek v. Sassi case sets out exactly what CAS requires before this is even considered.
Can our academy claim training compensation when a player we developed moves abroad?
Yes, in principle — this is exactly what the training compensation and solidarity mechanism rules exist for. See our Football Law Dictionary entries on both terms for how the claim actually works.
What happens if we miss a CAS appeal deadline?
The underlying decision becomes final and binding, full stop — CAS has ruled this way even where the miss was by a single day. See our Tanzania FA v. Amrouche and Ngezi v. Mafu cases, both decided on exactly this point.
Are we liable for a coach’s contract if we replace them without formally terminating first?
Effectively announcing a replacement can itself be treated as termination, even without a formal letter. See our FCF v. Raoul Savoy case.
Agent3›
Can a football agent represent both the player and the club in the same transaction?
This is tightly restricted under the FIFA Football Agent Regulations, given the obvious conflict of interest — it is not simply left to the parties’ discretion. See our Football Law Dictionary entry on FIFA agents.
Do I need a written, signed mandate to be paid as an agent?
A signature is the safest route, but CAS has held that the parties’ actual conduct can establish a binding agency contract even without one — see our Chiwenga v. SAFA case. Still, always get it in writing where you can.
Where are disputes about my agent commission actually decided?
Disputes specifically involving a licensed agent go to the Agents Chamber of the FIFA Football Tribunal. See our Football Law Dictionary entry on the FIFA Football Tribunal.
Federation3›
Can a federation’s decision be appealed to CAS?
Generally yes, once internal appeal routes are exhausted, and within the applicable deadline. See our Which Tribunal? tool for a general starting point.
Can our federation be held liable for supporter misconduct during a match?
Yes — CAF routinely fines the responsible federation for supporter conduct such as pitch invasions or thrown objects, treating crowd management as the federation’s own responsibility. See our Case Analysis library’s CAF Disciplinary Board entries.
Can a completed, refereed match still be forfeited afterward?
Yes, in specific circumstances — our Senegal FSF v. CAF case is a live, currently-pending example of exactly this question.
Academy2›
Can our academy claim training compensation directly, or only through the player’s most recent club?
Training compensation and solidarity payments are owed to every club that contributed to a player’s development, not just their most recent one — see our Football Law Dictionary entries on both mechanisms.
What records should our academy keep to support a future training compensation claim?
Clear, dated proof of when a player trained with you and for how long is essential — without it, a legitimate claim becomes very difficult to substantiate years later when a player eventually turns professional.
