Hohoe United's withdrawal followed a specific, escalating dispute with the GFA rather than arising out of nowhere. The club had been sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee over its 25 January 2026 home match against Vision FC, receiving a three-home-game stadium ban and a GHS 30,000 fine that Hohoe United said was imposed "without a hearing, without producing the original referee's report, and without any reasoned analysis." The club filed a formal appeal on 10 March 2026 under Article 35 of the Premier League Regulations and Article 58(4) of the GFA Statutes; when the GFA then published a fixture list on 23 March 2026 still listing Hohoe United's own stadium as the venue for its Match Week 27 fixture against Dreams FC, despite the active stadium ban, the club treated this as further evidence that "the current GFA system appears to be structured in a way that allows control and bias." Sitting in the relegation zone with 30 points from 27 matches, and reportedly the target of mediation efforts from the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) aimed at averting withdrawal, Hohoe United formally notified the Ghana Football Association of its decision to discontinue participation in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League during the competition's second round, on 1 April 2026, and then stopped honouring its remaining fixtures.
The GFA Disciplinary Committee found this a breach of Article 13 of the Ghana Premier League Regulations. On 1 May 2026, it suspended Hohoe United from the Ghana Premier League and all other GFA competitions until the 2029/2030 season, and separately ordered the club demoted, meaning it will re-enter competitive football in Division Two under the Greater Accra Regional Football Association once the suspension period ends.
The Committee addressed the practical consequence for the club's playing staff directly: every registered Hohoe United player was granted Free Agent status by the GFA's Players' Status Committee, free of encumbrance, save for whatever conditions attached to that player's own transfer into Hohoe United from a previous club. The club was also ordered to refund the full GHS 1,000,000 in financial support disbursed to it ahead of the season, along with any equipment or logistical support received from the GFA, and the Committee was explicit that the suspension itself does not extinguish any of the club's existing financial obligations to the GFA or to other member clubs.
Hohoe United retained a three-day window under GFA Statutes to appeal the decision to the Appeals Committee. The case is a clear illustration of how a national federation separates the consequences of a club's own misconduct (suspension, demotion, financial clawback) from the interests of the individual players registered to that club, who are freed to move on rather than left tied to a sanctioned entity.
