ES Sétif of Algeria was charged with misconduct after its supporters used smoke bombs, fireworks, and lasers during the club's TotalEnergies Champions League fixture against Espérance Sportive de Tunis, played on 15 April 2022.
The CAF Disciplinary Board imposed a fine of USD 16,000 on ES Sétif for the smoke bombs and fireworks, and a separate USD 8,000 fine for the use of lasers directed toward match officials and players.
In the same proceedings, the Board also found Espérance itself guilty of using smoke bombs during the fixture, ordering the club to pay its own fine of USD 8,000.
The case is a clean illustration of CAF's disciplinary process sanctioning both participants in a single fixture independently, where each club's own supporters were separately responsible for their own distinct pyrotechnic misconduct.
